A/C question

I found out that my pressure switch for my A/C is broken so I was thinking about ordering a new one and installing it myself. I know I have to recharge the system but is there anything else I have to do? Would it be worth it to do it myself or just pay for the dealer to do it? I found the switch for $36. Also how many cans of refrigerant will I need?
Thanks in advance.

I would take to a A/C shop. Unless you have a A/C evac. & recharge station I would not try this at home..

Yeah, if you don't have them do a full evac and cleaning cycle, you'll just kill another pressure switch and who knows what else in short order.

doesn't the press swt have a valve behind it so the system does not evacuate?Back in the R-12 days they did just about everything to prevent from venting to the atmosphere, I would suspect it still applies with the 135 gas. Worth checking out...

I agree here. Back during my stay at Autozone and Pep Boys the pressure switch has a schrader valve behind it, so you don't have to evac & recharge the system.

Just look at the part to be sure, if you see a little nipple sticking out of the middle where it screws on, then it has a valve behind it.

I used to unplug them and run a jumper across to get the A/C to work for a short period of time.
