Cargo Carrier

I have an 06 HHR with no roof rack.... what would it take to add a roof rack and cargo carrier for an upcoming road trip? Expensive?

There are universal roof racks on Ebay for $50, but a stocker will be at least $300.

That is what I use if I need to haul anything. I have a 4x6 featherlight tilt trailer and a 24"x60" hitch haul. I don't like to use roof racks, I have only used the one on the wifes MPV once and vowed never again.

In other threads people have said it was not advisable to add an after market roof rack because additional roof support is needed. Since the HHR doesn't have rain gutters, that type rack is not an option either. A trailer may be your best bet.

We have the factory roof rack with cross bars. We've carried home a ladder, a tree, and some trim from lowes.
I've seen several HHR's with a receiver hitch and the "hitch hauler" racks.
I haven't looked to see if all the correct holes are there for the hitch etc, they aren't hard to install though. the hitches and cargo carrier both can be had for $300 or less depending on which sizes, materials, brands etc.

I prefer as little on top of the car as possible.
