Did the dealership say they were going to pay off your loan for you?
They may not have contacted your loan holder.

I made that perfectly clear with my dealership. They actually rolled the negative equity on top of mine to get out from under my POS Cobalt SS. Wasn't much, and I am happy with how things turned out.

Contact an attorney, something is fishy here, gather all your documentation and get some representation quickly.

There was a dealer down here who said he'd pay off the loan on the car you traded in, but failed to do so. He went to jail and the original owners got stuck with the old debt.

It is better to have a car paid off before trading it in. In the old days it you took a loan out for more than 3 years you were upside down with the loan. The dealers are always willing to let the buyer take out a seven year loan.. Bad idea, IMHO if you need to take a long loan, the car you are trying to buy is too expensive for your budget.
