Compatible 2.2L engines for '07 HHR LT
 
Hello.

I have recently obtained a used '07 HHR LT. I bought it super cheap, a few hundred dollars. I am wondering what other engines are compatible with this year, make, and model. As it is very hard to come across the same one. It would be great to get some answers. I will be changing out the engine because there is a dead cylinder and the head was recently worked on however the previous owner had it worked on but the repair man must have done a bad job. It does run but very sluggish and check engine light is on.

Those codes indicate a bad #2 coil, something wrong with the EBCM (maybe the fuse),something wrong with the MAF sensor (probably unplugged).

He may have failed to reconnect a wire or 2.

Nothing to indicate a new engine. Have you done a compression check?

Possibly a really great price if you can fix these few items and everything is Cherry. Good luck and hopefully you'll not have to spend that much to get it running at 100%

The guy I bought it from (who is a auto shop owner and mechanic) says the owner before him had the head worked on but didn't tell me what was the problem on why it had to be done. He did say there was a cylinder dying and there was a cylinder with about 40 on the gauge. I booked a diagnostics earlier this week at another shop to see what the problem really is however they are short a tech and are short on hand. I tried again today and no open slot until next week.

I'm on the fence on buying some new ignition coils and see if that helps. I know there are a few things that can cause a cylinder being dead and a lost of pressure. I haven't checked the MAF but will later this afternoon. The car smells like it runs lean. It can get up to highway speed but it takes a while. When it warms up completely it dies when you come to very low speeds or to a complete stop.

Easiest test for coils is switch #2 and #3 see if the code changes from P0302 to P0303, in case it is not obvious the last digit indicates which cylinder.

None of the codes you posted has anything to do with fuel mixture. A misfire could cause a rich condition. It is possible that the ECM turned the injector off on the missing cylinder, that might cause a lean.

The P0300,P0302 and P0352 together says the #2 coil is bad. P0302 means misfire on #2, P0352 means the ignition circuit is not right, could be a wire or the coil. So, if after you switch coils all of the codes remain the same it is wiring, if it changes to P0303 it is the coil.

If one cylinder is 40 PSI after a head replacement either there is a hole in the piston or they did something horribly wrong with a valve.

To answer your original question; 2007 was mostly a stand alone year. The easiest thing to do is call a junkyard and tell them what you are doing; they have a computer matching thing.

I get off from work in a bit. Decided to do a compression check myself using a tool rental from O'Reilly, check the MAF, and double check the oil and antifreeze fluid for anything unusual. Wondering if I should check into the valve cover as well.

The engine does start and run but the engine shakes for a few seconds before idling out ok. No tapping noise whatsoever.

We had the engine replaced in our 07 hhr with one from a Pontiac g6 if I remember right.

Just got done with the tests.

Here is the compression results.

Cylinders (double checked):
#1. 70 psi
#2. 0 psi - checked 3 times!
#3. 70 psi
#4. 70 psi

MAF was not connected. It looked pretty clean. This engine also has a brand new head installed after the repair when the previous owner got it worked on. I took it for another drive and it died on me as I was coming to a stop. It turns back on with no problem. It did this twice but the I realized if I kept a little pressure on the gas pedal during very slow speeds around corners or to a stop the engine doesn't turn off. It does have the same turtle slow acceleration. It runs a little lean, barely noticeable. There is no white or blue smoke, or any kind of smoke, coming from the exhaust. Any ideas? It may be a sticky valve...? Bad gasket job?
