The OP's user name indicates he might be looking to install a Porsche 928 engine in this HHR....that would be an interesting V8 swap for sure.

Update again.

I called the salvage yard. Looks like the engine is coming from a '07 Cobalt 2.2L. Air check valve is not a big worry, it didn't show on both my blown engine and the salvaged engine.

the salvaged engine came into the yard with the vehicle. I was sent a picture of the car and engine. Tests were made and the car ran and drove when it came in. 150 psi across the board on the cylinders. 125K miles. $902.

My question is will this be ok to install into the HHR? A simple replacement or is there more to it?

And 928 HHR means area code in AZ, and of course, HHR.

If it fits drop it in! Enjoy the drive!

$902 including shipping? I would expect closer to $600-$800 for a used engine, maybe shop around a bit?
I would change the entire timing set and the water pump, they are a lot easier out of the car and good insurance.

H'mm ebay has a bare block for $250 shipped and rebuild kits for $350 assuming your head and externals are good and you have a basic understanding and tools .........

And used engines $1100-1400 shipped. Bargaining power, anyway.

Many others, I saw one $750 + $210 flat rate shipping. 42,204 miles! NO core.

That last one with the OEM of 42K miles seems like the best deal around. I may go that route and have it shipped here instead. I'm on a budget so I'll take my time taking out the engine from the car first then going from there. I called the Junk yard again. They're not moving down on the price.

Try car-part.com and enter your info. It will ask about the drilled manifold as a search condition.

Car-part will show parts by price or distance from your zip code.

There is a 2007 2.2L near me (Western New York) with 107K miles that they say runs great for $500.

I am in the process buying an engine from a salvage for $800 with a 3 month warranty. However, it is coming out of a 2007 Malibu 2.2L with 61K miles. It is has been tested completely before it was taken out of vehicle as the vehicle was hit from behind so I don't think there is damage to engine components. Would this be a a direct bolt on replacement for my 2007 HHR? Let me know asap. It is a 3 hour drive from me. And what should I look for before buying? What should I ask for? Thanks in advance! -Rico.

According to the chart yes it's a match

Looks like it will work. You may have to put some of your HHR parts on it. This is from wikipedia

"The 2004–2008 Chevrolet Malibu uses a version with electronic throttle control and a special unitized exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. The Malibu and Saturn versions also use return-less fuel injection."

That was for 2006 L61, and while it says there were changes to the L61 for 2007, it doesn't specify that these items were changed.

As long as the yard guarantees it to be a direct interchange, you should be good.

There are 2 things left of the coil pack on the valve cover. Mine does not have it. Would it still work?
