Coolant temp….

2011, 2.2…..whats normal. After new water pump and thermostat….mine is averaging about 190F but can go up to 205F (ambient temp. 93F, heat index 103F) climbing local hills/mountains….but it drops fairly quick after topping out. Seems to run cooler at highway speed than idling. 180F thermostat.
????
thoughts….opinions?

Thanks,

Roy

Which thermostat? What brand? Have you completed burping the coolant?

Im not sure if I have it all burped or not really but last couple times I removed the system cap there is no room to put more in.
The thermostat is not the AC one….will that make it have temp variations like that? How can that be? Its acting to me like it still has air in it….possibly causing pump cavitation, idk. The radiator fan suppose to come on at about 213F right? To my knowledge it hasnt came on other than when turn the a/c on. Maybe I need to let it idle an watch temp close with no a/c and check that. 205F after climbing mountain to my house here is as hot as it has got but I dont like that. Cooled down after the climb, and it is pretty hot temps here right now too. Maybe Im just paranoid. Lol

Healthy cooling system. Those numbers are very good. The reason it runs a little cooler while you're moving, is that when the car is still it needs the fan, which doesn't kick on right away unless the air conditioner is on. Try turning the air conditioner on and you may see an immediate drop.

You can feel secure that you have a healthy system. Peoples worry and asked if 220 is OK. And in some forums people will comment that its fine, but I don't think so. I think it suggests air in the system or some other problem.

Those temps I quoted were with the a/c on and fans running. The 205F only happened climbing the small mountain before my house ….about 1/2 mile of pretty steep incline ….with ambient temp. 93F, heat index 103F…so pretty out out here. Just seems higher than should be to me with 180F thermo

Radiator fan…

Here is something seems strange to me….if I turn my a/c on, the radiator fan comes on as it should but….even if I turn my a/c off the fan will continue to run till I turn the car off….then it stops and will stay off as long as a/c is off. Probably will come on once car reached certain temp.( 213F?)…I do need to check that

It’s the thermostat. It should hold temp at 180 to 186 degrees.
leave this one in until you get the P0128 code then install the AC Delco 131-158.

well..,ok. I am pretty new to Hhr’s. I know all you guys say you dont have a thermostat till you get the AC 131-158. I do need this thing to work as it should no doubt. Cant afford for it not to.
Any idea why the off brand thermos effect these things so much?

I know they are not cheap, but they work and last longer, a lot longer.
