In August we had a Derecho storm here in Cedar Rapids. Up to 140 mph winds for almost an hour. It looked like bombed out Beruit. I was on the top floor of Mercy hospital, having my right leg amputated just below the knee. The roof was getting ripped off there and rain poured into my hospital room. It was a couple more days before I was released to go home to see the damage. One tree that didn't end up on the house blew over the roof and hit my HHR in the front. Dented the grille and hood. I finally got it into my favored body shop for an estimate. The estimate was for $4995. My appointment date is to be June 21st, next year. I think they wrote it up as painting the whole car. Didn't need to paint the whole car. After the $317 hood and $55 grille, the rest was labor and materials. I got a call from insurance adjuster that evening. She told me that it was at 75% of value and they were totaling and they were going to send a truck to come and get it. I said BS. No one was taking my Panel. It is a 2009 and has finally rolled over to 56K miles. I always took good care of it and never figured I would have to buy another car.
I ended up buying it back for $438. After my $500 deductible and the $438 repurchase, they deposited $6215 in my credit union. Now I have to find a red hood and chrome grille that someone is parting out. I will find parts eventually, I can't really drive it with missing right leg. Plus I don't drive it in the winter. I kind of sucks to be missing a leg.
Sorry for you having to lose your leg, and just a thought, have you considered paintless dent repair? I’m thinking hellshotrod has a grille for you. Perhaps he will post here shortly
My brother was at a junk yard and found another red HHR hood for me. Not perfect but it will satisfy my insurance company that I fixed it. That and the silver grille was $80. It has a couple small hail dents in it. Now if I can get contractors to show up and get my house fixed before winter.
