Dog Barrier Question

Hi,

Just bought my first HHR. We have a large Shephard/Lab cross. We were looking for a dog barrier and couldn't find anything specifically made for the HHR. Then I was looking through some used HHR's on Ebay and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&it em=190220229170[/IMG]

Does anyone know who makes this barrier? Or where I can get one?

Thanks.

That looks more like a security barrier, rather than a pet barrier. Probably a lot more expensive than one.

Best bet is to head to your local pet store. All major retailers carry several brands ranging from $50-$100. Also they won't need to be permant or have any modifications to keep them in place.

Here a link frome the travel section of one of the 3 biggies.........

Here's one that is inexpensive and it's easy to install. I have one in my wife's Equinox. Keeping the mutts in the back limits the cleaning of the car after a trip to the vet. (2 Labs)

Thanks for the replies... And thanks for posting the picture.

I looked at your two recommended dog barriers. My only concern is that these barriers do not attach to the interior of the vehicle. They appear to have extendable legs which are then tightened. What I liked about the barrier in the picture is that it is bolted to the interior of the vehicle. Correct me if you think I'm wrong (I've never used or handled the barriers you recommend) but I would guess that in the event of a roll over or other serious collision a 75lb dog would easily topple over/through one of these types of barriers. A dog the size of mine would cause a great deal of damage to humans in the vehicle in such circumstances. The barrier in the picture is also made to fit the angle of the rear seat. The vertical barriers you recommend will cause wasted space behind the rear seat in an HHR.

Sorry If I'm coming across sounding critical. I do appreciate your suggestions. Well, maybe by bumping my message back up someone will recognize the dog screen in the picture and let me know... Hopefully.

Winston,

I have two Golden Retrievers who ride with me a lot. They love the HHR. I wanted a barrier that I could easily move between vehicles and something that wouldn't damage my interior.

I found one at PetsMart for about $69.00 or so. I was concerned about the use of suction cups on the headliner but, I haven't seen any problem with them. I leave the barrier up for weeks at a time and no damage or marks at all. I don't keep this barrier installed super tight against the headline and the dogs just leave it alone and stay away from it. They are just over a year old and still act like pups. But, they give the barrier respect and leave it alone.

I suppose if you had a dog that crashed against the barrier all the time, you may have to do something a little different with the installation. However, if your dog doesn't throw his weight against this barrier all the time, this is a very good setup.

This is a nice, basic barrier and it works great for me. It doesn't obstruct the view and I normally just forget it's there. It will also fit in my Tahoe.

The barriers are carried in the PetsMart stores. If you get one try it out for a while and if you don't like it, just return it. I had to go to three different PetsMart stores here in Vegas to find one because they were all sold out of the product.

You can see it at this link:

I almost forgot to mention that I installed this barrier directly behind the front seats with the poles running from the backseat floor to the headliner. I have the back seat laying down.

Geez Winston, what if a meteorite blazes down directly into the HHR?

The dog fence is there to keep them out of your lap, and that eliminates a lot of the chance for them contributing to something that would cause an accident. If you're gonna roll it, just leave the dogs home.

Maybe he wants to teach them both to roll over?

The photo looks good, at least it's bolted onto the car. The pressure mount ones will come loose in an accident, and the dog AND barrier may hit you in the back of the head. There are videos on the internet (can't find the link right now) of german crash tests done with appropriately weighted dog crash test dummies, and in some cases loose flying dogs inflicted fatal injuries on the human crash test dummies. My 4 year old son rides in a carseat in the back seat- I don't want a pressure mounted barrier to hit him in an accident. A crate sideways in the back or small crate on the rear floorboard are what worked out best in the german crash tests. At least one american company has crash tested dog seatbelts as well.
