You seem to be only talking about opening it from the inside. If the cable is disconnected from the inside handle, why would that keep you from opening the door from the outside?

Beats me
Honestly, I can't remember why it would not open from the outside either.
I do remember reaching in near where I removed a trim piece (or maybe part of the liner?), feeling around and finding a linkage that I jerked on to release the door. I also remember connecting something back onto the inside door handle.

Generally, I keep good notes and photos of how I did repairs for next time. I don't know why this one didn't get documented.
