Engine question

Is there a way to tell the difference between a 2,4 and a 2.2 without running the vin ? Outward appearance differences? Two local dealerships gave me two different answers ...as well as running thru vin decoders online. Again two different answers. thanks.

You can pop the air filter cover off and it will tell you right on the intake valve cover.

But looking at pictures online the black cover seems to be the same for 2.4 and 2.2

The is an emission label under the hood that will state 2.2 or 2.4 also you can look at the vin plate With Chevy the 8th digit is which engine is in the car. --- letter D on the HHR is the 2.2L
if it is P then you have the 2.4L

The eighth digit on my vin # is P. But it's also typed right on my registration that it's a 2.4L. Maybe ask the dealer to show you the old registration

There should be a sticker under the hood, on the bottom of it, iirc. Find that and it'll tell you if it's a 2.2 or 2.4.

Well. I'm confused.

The OP's sig says he has a 2009 Panel.
Lucky's vin search shows a 2011 w/2.4.

Hmm. I know that 2011 Panels only came in a LS trim(2.2 only)

Me thinks someone needs to clarify the vin. and if it is actually a panel and what year.

edit: Fwiw. According to GM's code listings. For the 2011 light truck application, the engine code
"U" designates a 2.4l.
