that is a 69-70 chevy pickup OEM front grille bowtie and they have them in several colors. have only seen yellow, red and blue.
are the pep boys 3" tall and 7 inches wide?

Pep boys or Auto Zone sell aftermarket aluminum bowties that fit the HHR cutout for between $18-30. These could easily be painted or anodized black (or any other color!), and installed on the beauty bar or grille.

And what about that "Spray on Chrome" It would work really well for this.
It is designed for exterior use and comes in several shades,
maybe even custom colors?
Their web page Spray on Chrome shows some really dazzling colors,
I, (Of course) like the purple as well as the other shades...
This stuff should work on metal, plastic, wood, ceremic, and just about anything.

Haven't really ever had good results with the 'Spray on Chrome' Galladanb... Just my experiences.
The process that manufacturers use to 'chrome' plastic is called METAL VACUMIZING. I'm not sure what specific criteria must be met in order for plastic to be chromed, however- once complete- it'll be as tough as your OEM plastic (Chrome) grille! For those of you interested, Google it and see if there's a (reasonably) close shop near you.
I guess living in the 'Motor City' has it's advantages (auto parts suppliers galore)... too bad the unemployment rate is over 6%!!!!
