Thanks to Texas D.O.T. I get to drill some holes in the front bumper for a license plate so I can avoid getting a ticket. I've seen a bunch of ricer's runnin around town with their front plate stuck in their front windshield with some suction cups, but with the visibility limited already, I dont want to do that. Has anyone had to mount a bracket for their plates on the front bumper? If so, is there anything I need to look out for when drilling? From what I can tell, there's nothing there to harm, but I'd rather wait and ask before I set off an airbag or something. If you've had to do this, any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

 

That's the one thing I'm already not looking forward to for moving to Colorado.....

 

I believe, if you look very well, you will notice 2 tiny holes/impressions in the front bumper. These holes are located where the GM/Chevrolet front license plate holder/frame is mounted. I do not believe the spacing is accomodating to the various states license plate holes.

You could buy the OEM frame/holder, which could make it easier. But it is kind of expensive, for what it is.


Am curious though.....if you purchased your car new from a dealer and Texas requires front and rear plates, shouldn't the holder come with the car?

 

You'd think that... But the car lot I bought it from put a paper tag on it that expired 4/16 and I didnt get the car until the 25th. This is exactly why I'm doing it myself. If I let them do it it would probably end up looking like my inspection sticker they stuck on there.

So on that one, do you only drill on the bottom of the bumper? My concern is I don't want to drill holes for when I move back and don't need a front plate, so I'd prefer to not drill holes where you can see them.

 

I have this in the electric remote version. It works great.

I has to drill three small holes under my SS air dam. One press of the button and it is up and in place if needed.

Not sure how it would mount on a regular HHR but it works fine on the SS.

Note if I remove it the holes will only be seen by road kill.

 

Good, bad, or otherwise, if your car was stolen and your police had the camera and soft wear to read every license plate I would prefer it on the front. When driving you only see the back of the car in front, but you see every car coming at you.

You might want to check gcsd3742's photo gallery. He has the mentioned front electric plate holder that members have mentioned. He posted pictures a few months back. His is also an SS, however.
