I had the problem. The dealer put brand new pistons on the tailgate and re-aligned it. It is perfect now, even in 18 degree weather. Very smooth operation. No popping or clicking.

 

We have that popping or clicking sound and it feels like it has magnetic catch that lets go of the tailgate, I just thought it was the “nature of the beast”.

 

I have this too. I can open the hatch about 1-2" but then it hits a spot with more friction, like something is sticking. A firm pull will open it past there, but there is a groan/squeak/click noise. It sounds to me like the hinges, but I will try lubing the struts first to see if that does it. If not, then I will go to the dealer, maybe get them to put some of that white chassis grease on the hinges.

 

Good information here, I was beginning to worry about mine. I really thought it had a lot to do with the cold weather as the first few times I ever opened it, it was much warmer and didn't do that. I have to take it in to get my stereo fixed anyhow, so I'll mention the struts back there I guess.

 

Glad(well not really) to see others with the same issue....I'll get my struts replaced as soon as time allows

I have the cracking noice, too. Only happens occasionally but sounds like the hinges just snapped in two.

Anyone tried out the WD40 solution?

 

No, dont use WD40. Use a lubricant. For painted surfaces, I think the white grease is ok, or a light machine oil for the struts. Not sure if the silcone spray is ok for paint, but it doesnt last long.

 

Another '08 with this problem here as well. No creaking, but very audible popping. Also will not do it a second time until driving the vehicle again. Very annoying.

Tried to take it to dealer this past weekend but I didn't realize they closed at noon. Will be working this coming weekend and then will try again after that.

Someone let me know if there's a TSB or certain part I should have the dealer look for. I have one of the dealers that loved to sell you the car, but hate to see you walk in after the sale.

 

Just an update that I finally got this looked at by my Chevy Dealer today.

He has put an order in for two new struts. Says he has seen a couple of 2008's with this problem specifically already.
