A 2006 Plymouth Neon was traveling southbound on the highway about 12:30 p.m. when an oncoming 2006 Chevrolet HHR crossed the centerline and the cars collided, according to State Police.

Schriever residents Rena Allen, 22, and Brenda Miles, 56, the driver and passenger of the Neon, respectively, died at the scene.

Joann Steward, 48, of Gibson, the Chevrolet’s driver, was airlifted to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. She was critically injured, authorities said

The passenger compartments on both cars are intact. I'd bet that none of the people involved were wearing seat belts. The HHR is the heavier vehicle and being a newer design than the ancient Neon (the inner structure of the Neon hasn't changed since '94), indeed it was the more survivable vehicle.

How much are you willing to bet??

According to LSP, all occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Considering the accident happened 2 months ago, I wonder if what the BAC test results were.

The Cabin of the HHR looks surprisingly in good condition. I'm willing to bet the driver's door was able to be opened to remove the driver.

Good to know, if it's ever actually tested, that the front end can absorb that kind of force. I'd like to see the HHR's cabin to see where the engine ended up.

I don't ever want to see my HHR looking like that or anyone else's for that matter, but it is good to know that the crash safety is built in to these cars. Truly 5 star!

Hey, no need to roll the eyes. "Properly restrained" can also mean the airbags kept the occupants from being ejected. Indeed, the LSP's press release also states that the driver of the HHR was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, which the OP referred to as critical.

This may also not have been any kind of DWI. Driver of the HHR could have fallen asleep or become distracted and drifted over the centerline.

Driver of HHR shows critical...passenger had moderate injuries. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this horrible crash...especially the families of those in the Neon.

Double Fatal Crash on LA 311

On Monday, May 26th, 2008 at 12:25 PM Louisiana State Police, Troop C investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 311 near the Ardoyne Plantation. The crash involved a 2006 Chevrolet HHR driven by Joann Stewart (W/F, 48 yrs), of Gibson, LA and a 2000 Plymouth Neon driven by Rena Allen (B/F, 22 yrs), of Schriever, LA. The Chevrolet was traveling north on LA 311 when it traveled across the centerline of LA 311 and struck the Plymouth, which was traveling southbound head on. After the impact, the Plymouth was forced backwards and rotated, coming to rest sideways in the southbound lane on LA 311.
The driver of the Plymouth, Allen and front passenger, Brenda Miles (B/F, 56 yrs, of Schriever, LA) suffered fatal injuries in the crash and were pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Stewart was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital in critical condition. A front passenger in the Chevrolet, Diane Boudreaux (W/F, 52 yrs, of Gibson, LA) was transported to Terrebonne General Hospital with moderate injuries

All occupants in this crash were properly restrained. Driver impairment is unknown at this time. (Results pending a toxicology examination).
Trooper Toups is continuing his investigation.
