HHR Down :O

Not mine :) but my son's LT2 Motor is shot w 85k :O He called me the other day because it crapped out :O Smells gas ! :o and make's a chattering sound :O Said he was going through Oil 1 or 2 qt a month! Knowing my son may have been 1 a week lol
Garage said gas leak dripping on exhaust :O not sure if the pipe or manifold, but either way not good lol No codes !
For the gas leak I think I have read some had them at the fuel rail ?
Oil consumption says no smoke or puddles ? Curious what you guys think, I am curious about the disappearing oil !
When I can I will talk to the mechanic but they are putting a used motor in ! I know a crap shoot but cheaper then car payments and HOPEFULLY Jr. keeps a closer eye on it this time

Thanks and Stay Safe

The oil has to go somewhere either drip or burn. Did it smoke? with that much oil loss there had to be drips or smoke. Is anything wet in the engine bay or under the car? Chattering sound would be trans usually, engine would knock. Just curious what the actual diagnostic is??

Oil slung out the front seal at the crankshaft harmonic balancer, doesn’t leave much of a drip or mess the in the engine bay, it slings out at higher revs while driving , the fuel could be corroded pipes, may be just new fuel lines, or injector seals.
yes, a crap shoot but still much better then a down payment and 3 or 4 years of car payments.
I strongly recommend before they install the new to you engine , replace the timing and balance shaft chains and the water pump, a new front seal is good insurance also

It is a lot faster and easier to change those things while the engine is out of the HHR

and don’t forget our discount at RockAuto!

FYI. If there are no obvious signs of oil leaking or burning, there are 2 possibilities. Either he has been adding oil when not needing to (and over filled it) or it's leaking into the cooling system. Check the radiator for oil mixed in the coolant.
My bet is it's been burning the oil and just wasn't noticed. If it was, then it has most likely soaked the catalytic converter and killed that. You'll then need a new cat to go with the replacement engine.

Oil soaked cat would throw a code, wouldn't it?

OP says there's no codes.

Yes, it would, like P0420. And if the coolant got into the oil and out to that catalytic converter , well that will kill that cat.
