HHR power steering
 

I have 2006 HHR that the power steering went months ago not on recall does any one know how to fix the problem with out paying the dealer the high price.

I have a 2006 that my dealer just changed the power steering motor under a "warranty" not a recall. It was ultimately NOT the problem but they did do that at no charge.

It can be done and it is NOT too hard of a job-Just take your time. I replaced mine and I didn't have the help of this site or a repair manual. I have an early 2006 HHR.

My first question is, Is it the electric motor or just the fuse?

If you search the site there is at least one really good thread with pictures of how to replace the motor.

You should have gotten a letter from GM by now.

To save the onerous task of reading threads, here is the salient line from GM:
Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.

The problem with doing it yourself is that you MAY purchase the old part not the new improved one and end up with the same problem again.

On the other hand, if your power steering "went out" immediately after a jumpstart the fuse is blown and you need to read your Owners Manual for proper jumpstart connections.

Interesting. I have both an 07 HHR and an 03 Ion that fall into that bulletin but I never got any letter about the EPS motor. I have gotten many letters for both cars about the ignition switch recall so it isn't that they don't have my address.

OP -

If you can't get a dealer to do it under that TSB that Donbrew has provided. Then you can find, in one or more of the power steering threads from a couple years back, where I posted 4 different revised EPS motor part numbers that are listed as fixes for the EPS motor issues. If you go to the parts department with those numbers in hand you can verify that you are getting a new version EPS motor. That is what I did and verified the part number on the one they handed me right there at the counter. Should cost less that $125 out the door.

It's not a TSB, it's an official "recall" filed with the NTSB. Not all recalls are actually recalls, in this case it is a lifetime warranty extension. They just use the "recall" for government speak.

There are 24 pages in the thread I linked. There really is no need to go over it again.

The letter I got looked like junk mail and almost went into the garbage.

Either way, like I said I received many letters about the ignition recall without mistaking them for junk mail but never received anything on this for either car. That is all I was pointing out since you say that the OP should have gotten a letter.
