If you intend on going fast and tuning, I suggest the STi. Ton's of go-fast(er) parts available and the AWD system is always a +. However, a pair of SS's would be pretty sweet

Check out a MS3 forum. I remember hearing something about major motor issues with mods.

When it comes to FAST, STI's have garbage drivelines, they break all the time. Pick the car you like the best and fits your individual needs. As far as fast, thats debatable.

Add a Camaro to the mix, that's what we did. Now have a "Perma Grin"

And you can blend in much better with the other mainstream neighborhood rides. At least the neighbors will know what you're driving

My neighbors look at an HHR as if it came from Mars

I would say a great companion car to the HHR is a Solstice/Sky. You get the great ecotec engine, RWD, convertible, beautiful lines, not too expensive, and they are IMO going to be collectable someday.
