K&n air filter

Does anyone use a K&N filter with the stock airbox? Is there any advantage over the stock filter, other than not having to replace it? I use K&N filters in most of my other vehicles, but I recently purchased a 2006 HHR and don't know if it is worth the money. Thanks.

Welcome to the site. I had one, but pulled it out. No horsepower difference and can cause your MAF sensor to throw a code.

X2...many people here(including me) have had issues with over oiled K&N's and sensitive MAF sensors...If you definitely want a new filter, its gotta be dry or oiled correctly.

I have had a K&N filter in the stock box on my 07 2.2 LT for four years now , never any code issues, I just lightly mist it when I wash and clean it, when I first purchased it, I dabbed up the excess oil with a paper towel, as it was soaked from the factory.
As for performance or increased fuel mileage, not very much. A new paper filter once a year would take 3 to 4 years for the price of the K&N

I have a k&n in my 06 2.2 mostly because nobody wanted to keep the paper one in stock so I went with the reusable k&n. No codes no performance gains at least that I can feel, per k&n you are supposed to let the oil soak in for a few hours before use just dont go crazy with the oil and you should be fine our little regularly aspirated engines don't suck in a lot of air like an ss will.

I'm confused by a couple of posts......

Why would you care if you need to replace it. I mean it lasts for something like 50,000 miles (more or less). That would be, under more than normal circumstances, every 2 years, or so.

And essentially the same question regarding, "....nobody wanted to keep the paper one in stock....". I mean, how often do you change it.....2 maybe 3 times a year?

I guess these comments really don't make sense. But if you want a K&N, just buy it and install it.....it's your car, you don't need other members permission.

I put one on my LT 2.4 using the stock air cleaner and found I got a little better pick-up and on Canadian gallons, three people and lots of luggage, 38 mpg at speed limits so I'm quite happy with the results.

I stay with the stock one based on my experience with a 2005 Chevy Express. I changed to a K&N cause we towed a trailer with it and I figured it would help. Had it in the Chevy dealer's shop and a real good mechanic (I've known him for years) told me the oil can mess up sensors. He also said that the quality of paper filters has come a long way and they are almost or as good as the k&N. Took it out, didn't notice any difference.
I needed one on our old 88 Suburban 454, made a big difference. But I got tired of the hassle of cleaning it then spraying the oil on it. Never did know how much oil to use.
