The best way I found is to set your lock system to only open the driver door when you put the HHR in park. Then exit the HHR and lock the driver door with the key. There are options you can set through the DIC. Two of them are Drivers door only and All doors open in park. You access the DIC by holding the button and turning on the key but do not start the engine.

I've always been confused on this. Most of the time my horn starts blowing and I jump in with the key. Sometimes it doesn't go off. I've tried to figure what I did differently, but really don't know. Does it have anything to do with turning the key to the left vs. right first when opening the car?

If you push the inside lock button it arms the alarm, if you shut the door and lock it with the key the alarm does not arm.

@AJochum, I have read your post about turning the key to the left vs. the right. I would like to exhaust my resources about your question; could you let me know what model year your HHR is?

Thats the only way to fly. I do that when I store my car, so the dash light doesn't stay lit.

Does that still allow access through the hatch? Is there a way to manually lock the hatch without arming the alarm?

Doors/hatch are locked, the factory alarm just isn't set.
