Hi all,

Just found this forum!
I just bought a new HHR 2009 LT two days ago. I was planning on towing
my Kawasaki 900 Jet Ski.
I have searched some of the posts---hundreds of them---but have not
found any pertaining to towing jet ski's.
I live in Kentucky and the boat ramps are STEEP. I won't be towing more than a few miles anytime I take it out.

Any advice.....suggestions?

---forgot to add, I have not bought a trailer hitch package yet either, so any advice on that is welcome as well.

I'm sure your HHR will handle your watercraft & trailer, the steep wet ramps might be fun though

I have a Curt hitch on mine, took about 30 minutes to install.

the hhr is supposed to be able to tow 1000 lbs and is limited to this because of the way a hitch attaches to the car.

How much would your tailer + jet ski weight. Add in the drag the water is going to create. Add in how many time you're going to do this. 3 times a week, twice a week, once a month, etc? Should be able to help you figure out the strain you'll put on the hhr. Guys have towed more then that and have been fine, but water does create a bit of pull.

Just came back from a short vacation there!

 

Thanks to all of you for your input!
I've checked out a lot of other threads by now and have decided on a draw-tite hitch.
My jet ski is used and did not come with a manual. I will research the weight of it and my
trailer. I will only use it once every two weeks m/l and I won't be travelling very far.
I'm guessing around 650# for the jet ski and about 250# for the trailer.

Yup---believe it or not, on Lake Cumberland in Russell Coounty we have 1250 miles of shore---so there's plenty of room to ride ....and wakeboard!

The first time I take it to the ramp, I will have someone with me to make sure I don't
get sucked into the lake.
I think I will be fine though.

I love this forum and I will be lurking for a long time as now I am so excited about my purchase that I want to start adding some extras along the way.

I will let you know how my towing experience goes when I get the hitch on Tuesday.

I may have to wait a few days, as the manual suggests putting 500 miles on it before towing.

You describe the ramps as steep. If they are steep and wet, think about how little weight there will be on the front drive wheels when you pull out of the water. I don't know if you will have a traction problem, but I can see it as a possibility, and certainly something to think about.

 

Man if your going to take it on some of those ramps in Cumberland i honestly don't think you would make it back up the ramp due to traction issues. I have been on some of those and since the drained the lake they are steep.
