I too had this problem with my brand new 07 2LT HHR. The dealer replaced the tailgate pistons and re-adjusted the tailgate. It is very smooth now. Suggest you have the dealer check it out. BUT, the dealer needs to know what they are doing. My dealer knew exactly what to do.
