You might want to take a look at this link about GM's monitor.

My mechanic of 21 years asked me something the other day when he was installing the Pilots. I asked him about synthetic oil and he said, "The longer you have oil in there, the longer you have dirt and other 'stuff' in there. Why would you want to KEEP dirt and other stuff in your engine for a longer time? The cleaner the oil, the better for your engine. Changing oil is a good way to keep the internal parts of your engine clean. Synthetic oil is great, but if you go longer between oil changes, how much longer are you also going with dirt (and other stuff) in the oil too? For me, I change my oil every 3,000 miles. I use petroleum based oil. My 1982 Chevy still purrs like a kitten. 220,000 miles and still running strong."

It's all a matter of opinion I guess.

I have used the Amsoil 1 year/ 25000 mile synthetic in all my vehicles, never had any problems.

Here's a report from a 6 month, 8151 mile run on Castrol Syntec.

Engine had two oil changes with dino before switching to synthetic.

If you get dirt in your oil, you my friend have other issues. Metal shavings yes, dirt no way.

As long as the oil's additive package can keep combustion by-products in check, you're good to go regardless of mileage.

I just checked this out..........thanks for the link. Thank you, and thanks to everyone that has responded. as well.
I will watch the oil monitor, miles, length of time as it passes, to make the best judgment. It seems like the oil monitor gives you a better way to know how long to go between changes, allowing us to take advantage of the new technology in oils, instead of blindly following the advice of those that say, "every 3,000 miles."
Yeah, we have probably beat this to death, but there are new drivers coming on line all the time and just maybe they will read these forums. I guess you are never too old to learn something.
