Outside Temperature Sensor

Thought this morning would be a good time to fill up the gas tank and a car wash.

Pulling into the automated car wash, I took a little extra time to get the underside washed well. Wash is complete, went through the hurricane tunnel, and headed home. Humm, something seems to be amiss! The dash readout on the outside temp says 64, but the bank thermometer across the street is showing 77.

Headed home, parked in the shade and went about my projects for the day. Checked several times during the day - dash readout still on 64, and the temperature was actually 89! Any ideas as to what's going on? Did I pull something loose when I lingered getting the underside washed? Where is the temperarture sensor located? Any ideas as to how to fix it?

Thanks much,
Rich

I had the outside temp sensor go on my 99 Buick. I don't know where it is located on the HHR, but it was just a plug in sensor. Take out the old, stick in the new. Or the plug may have gotten wet.

Where was it located on your Buick? It might be in the same place - or close - on the HHR.

Thanks,
Rich

IIRC, it's located inside the driver's side wheel well

Actually it's behind the passenger side headlight, The dash reading will hold the last temp when the vehicle was running until you start it again and drive approx 5 or 6 miles, then it will jump to the current outside temp.

It's not designed to be a instant temp reading when you turn the key on.

On my Buick it was behind the grill on the passenger side.

I know it won't get a new reading if you're driving under 18mph, so if you're going slow it won't be accurate. This accounts for engine heat, same as why it won't read for a few miles of driving once you turn it on, unless it's been off for a while.

I know this has been posted previously, but this is the worst temperature sensor I've ever had. My early Caddy was accurate constantly, Olds, etc. The other day it was 94 degrees ouside and I showed something like 60. Finally, I looked down and it was the 94. How is it they can put a sensor up to your ear (costs about $5.00) and get an instant 96.8 degrees, but it takes (as someone earlier posted) 6 miles or so. I have no confidence it it. Heat is heat, cold is cold - what is so difficult?

Unfortunately Chevy is not alone, My 2003 Jeep, Grand Cherokee is the same way. You have to drive it above 15mph for 5 - 7 miles before it will read the correct temps.
