The HHR owners manual shows a diagram of the locations where the screw jack should be placed. It also states that there are arrows (or triangular shaped cutouts) in the lower edge of the rocker panel to indicate exactly where to place the jack.

I have factory-installed running boards on my HHR and I cannot detect the so-called arrows (or cut-outs). Also, the running boards are attached at three different points, and two of the attachment points seem to be where the screw jack should be located at either end.

Any advice for this somewhat mechanically challenged HHR owner?

BUT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO YOU PLACE THE JACK ON THE RUNNING BOARDS.

Disregard all that I wrote previously. I have a slight revision, after checking the car.

Because the running boards extend out from the rooker panels, I believe you may have a misconception of the proper location.

The area that you noticed the running boards attached to (the 3 attachment points you mentioned)....is the "rib" that the jack fits on. That rib runs the length of the 2 doors and fits into the "french curve" groove in the top of the jack.

Positioning the jack in the area of the arrows provides good weight distribution.

Unless I'm on the road, I use a floor jack roughly in the same area and I have running boards.

 

Cut outs are not a good term to describe the arrows. They are more like small triangle shaped indentations. Kind of hard to spot if you don't know what you are looking for.
