Owner doing oil changes

We have a 2007 HHR. It's now at 3000+ miles and the indicator has not come on to 'change oil' but will soon according to the manual. Hubby has always maintained our cars and done his own oil changes and always every 1500 - 2000 miles. He's very nervous about acculating more miles without a change. Are we at the mercy of 'Mr Goodwrench' whose charges will no doubt be high or can he continue the 'do it yourself' method?

Mine normally goes 7000 plus miles before it display's "change oil" I used to change mine every 2000 - 5000 but I figure that the engineers put the oil life system in for a reason and it saved me money by not changing the oil too often. The good thing about this engine is it is one of the easiest I have owned to do your own oil change on. (just make sure you have the right socket for the oil filter cap)
