First, the remote won’t work if you just press it momentarily; you need to hold it down for a couple seconds or so. If the check engine light (CEL) is on, the remote start won’t work, at least for some codes. It is imperative that you immediately find out what is triggering a CEL. If there is no CEL, the car’s computer could still be unhappy. Pulling the red fuse in the battery terminal in the spare tire well will reset the computer. I do this for about 20 minutes; I don’t know what the minimum time is for it to work. If you put the fuse back in and immediately try the remote start and it works, you have a clue.
It's just amazing the things you can find by just reading the Owners Manual.
To answer the OP's question about remote start and stopping the engine with the remote, here it is.....right from the Owners Manual.
To manually shut off the engine after a remote start: .
Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle and press the remote start button until the parking lamps turn off. .
Turn on the hazard warning flashers. See Hazard Warning Flashers on page 4‑3. .
Insert the vehicle's key into the ignition switch and turn the switch to ON/RUN and then back to LOCK/OFF.

Turn on the hazards? Interesting. I've never had to do that part. Just hold the button and it shuts off. Same for my wife's Encore.

I think they put that in there because it wont remote start with the hazards on, so turning them on during a remote start also kills it. That way people wouldn't think they had an issue because they had remote started there vehicle and then for whatever reason they decided to turn on the hazard lights.
[Pull the red fuse on the battery terminal] only resets the BCM.
Huh. When I do that, the CEL goes off... for awhile anyway. I assumed when it eventually came back on, the problem was recurring (no reason to think it’s fixed, anyway) but now the thick plottens.
