Replacing OEM HHR Battery with a Yellow Top Optima

Has anybody Replaced their OEM HHR Battery with a Yellow Top Optima?

1.) If you have how did you go about it?

2.) Would be as simple as just installing the optima battery?

3) Lastly is the stock alternator not large enough to charge a yellow top optima?

I am asking because I wish to run a 1500-watt pure sine wave DC to AC power inverter in my HHR!!!

Welcome to the site
I have a blue top optima battery in my 08. I installed it 5 years ago.

I have had no problems with it but understand that an hhr battery should be vented because it's mounted inside the car.

I would think that the best way to do it is to install a vented battery box with the battery.

Optima batteries are gell aren't they? That would not require venting.

Copied this from the Optima site.
When used with a properly regulated constant voltage charging system (such as an alternator), the OPTIMA will not emit hydrogen gas. However, gassing can occur when charging at excessive voltage levels or in extreme high-temperature conditions. In automotive applications, this typically will not happen if the alternator/regulator stays below 15 volts

Based on that, I would still want it vented to the outside. Just in case.

Venting is always a good idea!

It's not just "can the alternator charge this battery". How much draw is the inverter going to impose?

And to the forums!!

this is the Spec's on the Inverter I wish to run
as you can see it has a 1.6 amp draw at no-load
Is the HHR's stock alternator big enough for this?

Spec's of Inverter:

We all like to provide answers, but you might be better of talking to Optima. They should be able to look up the specs on the HHR, you can give them the specs of the inverter. Tell them if you plan to operate the inverter while the engine is off, and for how long, they will probably have other pertinent questions.

Ask them if their batteries are 'ventable'. You may have to upgrade the alternator, or maybe you can hook it to a maintainer every night.

No load doesn't really matter since it's minimal.
It will depend on what you run with it. Power draw times length of use would be the factors.

1500 watts at 14v = about 107 amps That's not taking into effect losses and such so if the inverter is running full tilt it's quite the draw.
