Hey Y'all, I've been checking out the 2007 HHR specs and I noticed it has a side curtain airbag system. Was this offered on the 2006? Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the 06 came with a side impact airbag (the kind that pop out of the side of the seat.) I would really like side curtains as I think they are excellent in a collision.

 

It was offered in the list of available option on the 06 models.

 

It was extra, an option That is why it was so hard for me to find the one I wanted,,,,I wanted the side air curtains.

 

The '06 model had side curtain airbags available as an option. Starting in '07, all GM vehicles come equipped with them standard. My wife's G6, the base economy model of the car, has side curtains.

 

I knew they were an option when I bought my 06 but when I read "side impact airbag" I did not know that was the curtain type. My Impala has side impact airbags and they are the kind that deploy from the seat and I don't think they are as safe as curtain bags.

You are probably right in saying that it is hard to find one with the curtains. I would have had to special order which would have taken a lot of time.

I missed out and I'm a little disappointed but life goes on. I'll have to research these things more next time and not buy on impulse.

 

Personally, I dont like them because when they go off...the mess up my hair!

 

For 07 front airbags are standard but the head-curtain side-impact airbags are still optional and require antilock brakes on the LS and 1LT.

 

I bought the side curtain airbags on my 06 HHR LT. They were about $400, but also required spending $400 for the anti-lock brakes (which I didn't want). After I bought the HHR with the side curtain airbags, the tests came out that showed the HHR has a 5-star side impact rating WITHOUT side curtain airbags. Of course, it must be even better with the side curtain airbags. I just wasn't happy about being forced to buy the ABS. I could have used the $400 for a better sound system instead of ABS.

In the '06 manual page 1-56 indicates roof-mounted side impact airbags (ie side curtain?) + plugs in the a/b pillars (which read "airbag" if equipped/blank if not). Definately not seat-deployed.
