that light is to see the radio and heater controls. On the 06 07 HRR the window controls were in front of the shifter.

Although it does have a function as pointed above, I find it more of ambient lighting than anything else ... the Jetta Mk5 has two of them in red that just adds a bit of light into the cabin and other cars like the 2010+ Mustangs and Camaros have ambient lighting throughout the car.

Personally, I like it but than I'm weird lol

Nope your not the only one. I find it quite useful at night, as it lights the lower part of the console including the window controls on my 07. Also it makes it really easy to know when the headlights are on.

light wash

I, too, would love to have a 2009 dome light because the map lights on the rear-view mirror are too far forward. However, I would want to ADD it rather than substitute for the light wash (I don't have Onstar). That little LED light wash is the only way you can see the unlighted window controls at night. GM pinched pennies by locating the switches close to their controller and have less wiring, and saved again by having them be unlit. Other places in this forum detail how to install lights that can encircle the light control switches. Of course, the headliner would have to be lowered and power connections probably changed for the dome light. In other words, it all can be done, but it would more than you would think at first impression. If you don't like the light wash, just cover with electrical tape and then discover all you suddenly can't see at night!
