Almost any trade-in value is going to be "crap" if you've only made two or three payments on a five year note with no money down. Dealer profit is almost 23% on average on used vehicles--there's a reason for that!

I happen to know a few things about Dodge Ram, Why?, My brother in-law HAD one....I WOULD NOT get a RAM.....NO WAY!, That thing sucks gas like a newborn infant!!...FAST AND GREEDILY!...The Ram has a feature like the HHR that tells you your avg. MPG, and the highest I saw it go was 12.7!!!

Sounds like he has a reason for needing a p/u..any truck is going to suck the gas but if the need is there than you pay the price for that need. So sticking with the HHR is a no go

If the guy needs a pick up the HHR makes no sense. In 2003 I bought a new Dodge ram. A loaded, every option, regular cab with the Hemi motor. An absolutely terrific truck $31,000 worth.
But the best I ever got was 12.2 mpg. Tried to trade it in 2 years later, and the same dealer wanted to give me $13.500 on trade in. Truck only had 13,000 miles and was in perfect condition! You can't trade in a vehicle you've had for less than a year and not lose alot of money, especially when they are discounting new HHR's $3500 and more.
As far as being a loaded HHR, there were 8 leftover 2006 HHR's that I found when we were shopping for ours, 3 months before the 2008 release. They were all loaded HHR's with list prices of $23,000 or more. We bought our HHR because of the gas mileage and we needed to haul 3 dog cages occasionally and the HHR had the room. For the money HHR's are hard to beat, but if you need a truck, you need a truck !
