I will be traveling from Syracuse, NY to Pittsburgh, PA at the end of December... should I take my studded snows off and put my regular tires back on before doing all of that highway driving?

if your expecting any weather go ahead and keep them on no reason to take them off

 

I'd keep them on as you are driving into and through the snow belt..I-90 to I-79 I suspect. I-90 west of Buffalo is notorious white out in the winter.

 

Running them on the dry expressway will wear them a little quicker but would it really be worth the hassle of changing them over and then back? I don't think so. I keep mine on all winter regardless of the driving I have to do personally.

 

if coming up to Canada the province of quebec has now made them MANDATORY snow tires..Ontario is shootin for the same thing.

 

Are you guys talking about metal studed tires, I'm pretty sure there illegal in IL. ?

 

Leaving them on won't really hurt anything. You will notice a lot more noise on dry roads and at night you may see a line of sparks coming off them, which is why some states have made them illegal and most states make them illegal outside of winter. If they are legal where your vehicle is registered there shouldn't be any problems.

 

Ahh never mind, I thought he meant new by studded. LOL. Guess I don't live far enough North.

 

I believe they are legal in PA from Nov 15th to April 15th. Just like Ohio.

 

ill be driving to chicago with normal tires. i never knew there were such things. and does anyone know if tire chains are allowed in IL?
