Suspension and Winter

Hey Y'all,

So it got cold about a week ago up here in Calgary. I mean really cold. Today's high is supposed to be -29C (-22F) and with a windchill it feels like
-40C (-40F)

I took a few trip over the weekend. My HHR is garaged all the time and the temp in the garage is a little above freezing. I have a 2.4 with the sport suspension and I noticed whenever I hit a bump, expansion joint or speedbump the suspension would make a terrible noise. I'm assuming it is coming from the shocks. Might they be freezing???
I don't recall hearing something like this before in my other vehicles.

Anyone else in cold place experienced this yet? Is there a need to be concerned?

Thanks everyone!

My 2001 and 2003 Chevy Malibus did that in really cold weather, but our cars are not garaged.

Have you had any snow yet, or just the cold?

It was even worse if the weather was warm and slushy followed by a flash freeze.

Hi there in balmy Calgary,

It was -22 in Edmonton this morning but she started instantly and I am thankful for that. She is kept in an unheated garage, yet I got some cabin heat within five minutes - pretty good I would think. I did not notice any suspension difference - I have the regular touring kind, but there was a lot of frozen lumps on the road so it was hard to tell for sure.

We've had lots of snow along with the cold Rose. We've had about 10cm (4inches) or so in the last 5 days.

Peter, the HHR does start good in the cold and it does warm up quickly. I can't seem to find the right airflow from the vents though. I find that 1 is too weak and it gets cold in the car but with 2 it blows too much and it becomes a sauna.

This weather should be gone by the end of the week, or so I am told!

Ok it`s me again, This celcius temp thing ,do the numbers start getting closer after (0).? -29c is mighty close to -22f, and -40 is running neck-
to-neck with -40f.

I think that's what was causing a lot of the noise in the Malibus...ice on the rear coil springs around the shocks.

I can't seem to find the right airflow from the vents though. I find that 1 is too weak and it gets cold in the car but with 2 it blows too much and it becomes a sauna.
I find that as well. Once it gets toasty warm, I switch the heater to use the floor vents, since the floor vents output seems to be rather weak in comparison to the upper ones.

This weather should be gone by the end of the week, or so I am told!
But it's just a teaser of much worse things to come...it's not even December yet.

Try turning the temp control down one or two detents after it warms the car up , use bi/level setting, a little playing with the controls should help you find a good setting that you like .......
