Towing Your HHR
I've had no trouble towing HHR 4-wheels-down behind my Mhome. I installed a tow bar from Roadmaster which did require taking the front bumper off and dropping the axle which was not difficult even though I am not a mechanic - there are step by step instructions, it takes about 4 hours if you work carefully. When towing you remove a fuse to ensure the battery stays alive. Even with the automatic towing is allowed. If anyone wants more detail I can provide. I am very happy using the HHR as a TOAD.
More details about flat towing
Hi Ralph - we just bought a new RV and would like to flat-tow my HHR rather than use the dolly, which we were doing with our old RV and my husband's PT Cruiser. Can you tell me more about what you installed to accomplish this? We were looking at the Blue OX set up - it's all so expensive, but so much easier than the darn dolly. I would be most appreciative if you could provide me with some more details about your set up. We're planning a trip to Canada in August and definitely want to take a car.
Thanks so much!

I have the blue ox base plate on my 07 hhr auto trans. It works great. It did require removing the front bumper cover and drill some holes but was very easy to do. I did not have to do anything with the axle. Instead of pulling the fuse each time I hooked up a switch in the glove box to turn off the acc. Power with the key on. It towed very well didn't even know it was back there 4500 miles I did not use a brake system last year but I have one this year for extra safety and to be legal. Also as a side note Chevy don't recommend towing an hhr on a dolly for the 2006,2007and the 2008 model year.

I flat tow my 2009 HHR behind my motorhome and don't have any trouble at all. I have the blue ox base plate...easily installed removing the front bumper. It takes about 5 minutes to get everything hooked up, turn the key on, shift to neutral, pull the fuse, and I am on my way! I don't even feel it back there...have to have the kids go look out the bak window to make sure its still there sometimes...HA!
Towing your HHR
I too tow my 2011 HHR using the Blue Ox system, I did add a switch to replace the fuse which I ordered through RV-Parts Plus, a Canadian Company and it works quite well. Building your own should not be a problem if you choose to go that way. My only problem was lowering the height of the tow bar to level the pulling angle which now causes it to scrape on my driveway. I also need to make the air dam stronger so it doesn't pull off. I used to pull a 4X4 Tacoma but my handicapped wife is not able to get into it so had to go with the lower car....Sigh.

I'll chime in too. We have been towing our 2007 HHR since it was new, which Is what we bought it for. I use blue ox towing gear, base plate, tow bar, and have never had a problem. We are in fact on the road now, towing. As far as that fuse, (fuse 8) its pretty easy to wire in a switch, much easier than pulling the fuse every time you set up to tow. Don't forget brakes, some states are very strict about requiring that your towed vehicle has brakes, and a break away cable, just in case. I use a US Gear braking system, which is easy and works great.
