Exclamation Warped Rotors at 10,000 miles

Hey everyone, I know I don't post much..but I thought this would be worth relaying. I've had my Black HHR LT2 since November, and have a total of about 10,500 miles as of today. The past week or so I noticed a severe vibration in the steering wheel and through the brake pedal, but only after braking maybe the 3rd of 4th time during a small trip...longer road trips and more frequent braking made it worse. I took my car to the shop monday and they tell me they had to turn/resurface the rotors because they were warped...... 10k miles and warped rotors...something doesn't add up here. HHR is fine for now..but i called Chevy and complained ..I am NOT going to have to take my car in every 10k miles and have the rotors resurfaced..total BS. I hope nobody else has had this problem....just be on the look out. Also, they told me it might have been caused by the car being driven through a puddle....(BS) because who hasn't driven in the rain... ugh. Hopefully i'll hear something from Chevy.

Warped rotors happen to many vehicles during the rainy season. Much of it depends or your driving style. Drivers who brake hard and often in heavy traffic usually see more warpage. Puddles can play a part in it, but generally the cause is a hot rotor being quickly cooled by rain or splashed water.

Your dealer should warranty this without issue. Ask for a new set of replacement rotors, as turning your existing rotors will rob you of some "meat" needed for future brake jobs. Also, if your otors were superheated, the metal's grain structure may be altered now, and turning them will only be a "quick fix" - and not rectify the problem permanently.

If you find that your dealer cannot get new rotors yet, take the "turn job" - while waiting for the special order to come in.
Have them also check to see if the Cobalt SS rotors might fit...

Hope it helps,

That's pretty crappy. I'm at 12,000 and I haven't had any problems with that.

thanks for the responses....i did talk to chevy for a 2nd time asking about replacement and they said that they are not able to replace the rotors because as of right now...they are functional..but since its documented with them...IF they happen to do the same thing in the future..they will either give me new rotors or give me the $$ to pay for new ones.

I guess I am worse

I have 5400 miles and need them done. I had them in this week and they told me they can't feel the shake at 40 mph.

I have to bring it back because it happens at higher speeds and under a load like coming down a mountain.

All this shaking going on with the rotors...Is this also being taken in count of the ABS? You will feel shakes and vibration with ABS which is usually a good thing. That means they're working. Just a thought.

This happens a lot of times if you are doing a lot of stop and go in heavy traffic and then run through water on a quick cooldown. I do not know where you live in Georgia, but I had the same problem with a Saturn Vue that my wife drove on I 285 every day.
