It is your evap canister it stores fuel vapors from your gas tank and allows the engine to burn them later. It is designed to cut down on hydrocarbon emisions. They have been around a long time but have gotten considerably more advanced since OBD2

 

Does that have to do with the little tube thing hanging down aft of the car?
