What Did You Do To Your HHR Today?
Geg, good eye Noah! Living in the rust belt makes rust proofing an annual event, in late summer early fall, I jack up the BlackSwan support it at all four corners in jack stands , take a stainless steel wire brush and scrub off as much surface scales as I can , then rinse with brake cleaner spray, another rinse with Dawn dish soap, then wipe the underside with automatic transmission fluid, I leave that on for a day, then rinse again with Dawn . When dry, I spray the entire underside with Rust Check and Fluid Film. These products stay on through most of the winter into the spring , then I wash them off with Gunk engine shampoo, and another spray of Fluid Film.
this as you can see doesn’t stop the stone chips , rock salt and sand from chipping away at the painted panels under the HHR , this year, I’m going to apply Eastwood rust encapsulator , then black frame paint. I’ve considered POR 15 also, I’ll have to consult with Fred my bodyman and see what he recommends.
I had planned on doing this awhile ago but the pandemic closed his shop and the stores.
I got notifications this morning from FedEx, the RockAuto shipment should be here tomorrow afternoon, so depending on weather, I’ll be replacing those bushings soon afterwards and filming the progress.

It's pretty good, but has been known to let water and moisture get in behind it and fail. And it's a moisture cure paint so cover your floors and wear a paint suit and gloves, it's messy.
The rust converter is basically phosphoric acid and glycol, much cheaper at Homey Depot under the name of Metal Prep by Kleen Strip, really the same as OSPHO just cheaper.
You can talk to this guy, highly regarded products, just more info of course. https://www.hirschauto.com/
Of course and full sleeve and legged coveralls!
Today , we’ll be headed out to Black Creek for a walk, then into Thorold for a coffee, the FedEx truck doesn’t arrive till after 3 pm , so the bushings won’t be here till then, might as well get some exercise.

I have used POR-15 a lot.
For it to work properly, you have to encapsulate the rust completely from all sides.
If you only paint one side of rusty metal with POR-15, it will rust through from the other side. You have to cover all sides and edges with POR-15 for it to work properly.
Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to stop rust completely, they all have some drawbacks.
On my old Suburban, the bottom edge of the driver's door was starting to rust on the inside edge. I took the door panel off and brushed POR-15 inside the bottom of the door. Then I painted the bottom inside edge of the door with POR-15. This stopped the rusting for several years until I had to do it again. It worked because the rust was encapsulated from both sides. If I had only painted the inside bottom edge of the door, rusting would still be going on from inside the door and it would not work.
