What is the stupidest design error?
SCE_HHR is correct, this has been an issue long before oversize brakes. GM rear wheel drive models with Limited Slip Diff's got full size spare standard. Models without limited slip still has stickers stating to put the donut on the front because of the differential. I think the reason HHR spare instructions state to put donut on the back only, is more to due with the vehicle having traction control. I don't know if wheel/tire height difference is enough for wheel speed sensor data to trigger traction control to back off throttle and pulse brake caliper, but I'm not going to try it.
I agree.....poorly done in my opinion. But GM many times believes that when the consumer gets something "special", they will give up something else or accept an inconvenience.........i.e., auto trans in the SS, no spare tires (in some "specialty models)for example.

Did they move them on later models? If so, can older models (2007) be retrofitted? The buttons on our 2007 LT are a mother to reach, specially for a taller driver.
for the 2009 model year the window buttons were moved to the doors..
My 08 still has em in the middle, but I'm used to em there..
I'm sure you could retro-fit, as others have, check out the "How To" section here..
Much info there on about any mod ya can think of..
Off all the complaints here I only see a few that do not belong to the piss and moan club. Not too bad over all for a inexpensive little wagon.
Over all while there are a few things here that could be better I have seen much much worse on more expensive cars.
The BMW that makes me take the oil filter bracket off to pull the entire oil canister out the top just to change the oil filter. Or I could remove the sway bar to remove it. Near impossible plugs to reach on many cars. The Bonneville I had to remove the engine mount and support the engine to change a SC belt etc.
I wish they were as easy as not pulling up as far at a light to see it to fix.

door lock buttons
My other cars are vetts, the window buttons are on the console so I'm used to the location. I perfer a switch for the head lights, not a pole stick on the turn signal arm.

I removed mine, trimmed the threaded metal stem, wound the plastic chrome lock pin (knob) back on & they are Flush in lock-down..
I am surprised that no one mentioned the horn or I missed it. It was horrible on my SS. It was the first thing I changed on the car. I have in 09 SS and I think it looks bad ass but I hit the horn and it's sounds like a joke. I went to a junk yard and bought a dual horn from an 02 impala and wired it up. Now it sounds like a horn. gm used a single horn on the hhr instead of a dual horn thats why it sounds so bad. Also the cup holders suck , I have rattles and I agree the front suspension clunks a bit but. All in all I love this car. She all ways puts a smile on my face. Oh yea the dead battery and rear door latch issue with a 5 speed just pop the clutch and it will start. Has not happened to me yet but have done this on other cars Ive owned. Does not work on auto.
