I'm just curious how some of you feel about when to let go of a car. My 2006 HHR has been probably the best, most dependable, car I've had. Aside from one major oil leak, it has been a real trooper. Now I have a transmission issue that will run about $1400+ to get me rolling again. My car has 224,500 miles on it. I know there are no guarantees with repairs, but would you do it? I am leaning toward making this one last repair. Thanks in advance for any replies.

 

How much will a new car payment be?

 

A used transmission? Then drive for some more years, that's my opinion!

 

What does the $1400 cover? Like Oldblue suggested, a used low-mileage transmission might be a better choice.

 

$1400 covers partial rebuild of my existing transmission, kinda making it a 'used' transmission. I know it's not a full tear down and rebuild. Supposedly, a brand new tranny would be $2500ish. I guess that would be about 6 months of new car notes.

 

Sounds ok - up here a lot of trans repairs on a lot of vehicles start at $4000!!!!

1400 is barely a down payment.
On the other hand, with 225K, the car doesn't owe you anything...

 

To me 1400 for a partial rebuild sounds ridiculous. Makes me think they are going to try and fix it but there not sure what wrong with it.

I would go for a uses trans. I would also call around a little and get prices from other shops.

 

$1400 sounds like R&R labor, not rebuild.
