09 SS w Performance Pkg - winter tires
Jeff is correct Shop around wheels that fit properly are all around.
No need to get a dealer involved here as many have no clue about many of their cars if you do no use an exact replacment or they want to try to make you think you have to have an exact replacment.
Many people here have already tested combo's for you and have taken the worry on what will and will not work. Some backed up with pictures.
You HHR has many parts on it used on many other GM cars. It is based on a Delta platform that under pins a Cobalt, Malibu, G6 and many other GM cars.
Heck even some of the parts are used on RWD Sky and Solstice.
Take jeffs advice and shop around as you will not only save money but also find something you may really like.

Might just want to get a winter beater car. I"m keeping my Jeep so I don't have to worry about the SS in the winter. I may get rims and tires but my wife's Honda will be a priority. PITA having 3 cars but that's what you get with the SS in a northern climate...

Well, unless my dealer doesn't know his part numbers, I can say categorically that GM PART # 9597624 wheel does not clear Brembo brakes on front of HHR SS with performance package. Tried to fit one today and it definitely does not clear.
I don't think just the backspace and offset spec's are sufficient for this problem. The curvature and thickness of the wheel spokes also plays a role. I've seen this defined as the rims's "Q-factor".

I tried a g6 17" wheel on my buddies 09 cobalt sstc and it cleared the brembro brakes on the front fine, no clearaance problems we could see. I have the wheels on my o8 sshhr and have like 2 inches of clearance, so I do not think the 09 will have any problems.
Something certainly doesn't add up. I checked the fit myself at the dealers. Makes me wonder if we are talking about the same rim. Could you (BLUEHHRSS5SPEED) post a picture? I should be able to recognize against the wheel I saw fitted. Thank.
This is the exact wheel we tried, I did not get a picture of it on the cobalt. As you can see in this with the 08 brakes there is over an inch and a half of clearance from the brake caliper to the rim, and on the cobalt it appeared to be about 1/2" of clearance. I'm sorry i did not take a picture of it. But if I were you I would find some one who has a G6 and try and test fit the 17" steel wheel to make sure.
Certainly looks like the same rim that didn't clear Brembo's on my HHR SS. Suggest you talk to your friend with the Cobalt and one or the other of you join Cobalt forum and show your findings. Some folks over there are desperate to find a solution. Particularly those in areas in Canada who are required by law to run winter tires. Website / message thread is

No one there has found a solution (for which they have shown pictures to substantiate) that doesn't require spacers.

here is another Cobalt thread about Brembo's and rim size that has a good picture of the front Brembo's in question
