Any ideas on how to correct this very annoying issue?

maybe a linkage adjustment, shifter not fully engaging gear

Leave it in 4th ?? Sorry, I only have autos. Hope some one can tell you whats up with yours.

adj cable and check motor mounts...eng rock could be pulling on cable..

Have the stealership look at it, assuming you're still under the powertrain warranty.
