2009 HHR SS Brakes

Does anybody have a problem with the HHR SS stock brakes that seem to create a lot of brake dust on the wheels? I have 5300 miles on my 09 and have to clean the wheels all the time. Is this normal or maybe defective pads?

I had an 06 LT2 before my SS and there's a spacer kit that helps prevent buildup on the brakes. Not sure if it is the same for SS's. Seems like that would have been a good standardization. Ask your dealer about that kit.

Just change pads to a low dust and it will improve.

Thanks for the replies. I would have thought that GM would have put better brake pads on an SS model due to the added HP. I will look into changing the pads and adding drilled & slotted rotors as well.

I'd think carefully about drilled & slotted rotors. They're primarily a show add and not for performance.

BUMP! Screw the drilled rotors, get the brakes upgraded instead.

Just go with a good set of ceramic or carbon fiber pads. They are low dust and most good quality brands will work well on the street.

Like stated unless you want looks the stock rotor are the best you can have. Drilled and dimpled are just for looks and will not add to you brakes performance.

The key it to remove the heat and a drilled rotor has less heat sink qualities. They do not cool faster or really release gasses of the new material pads. The ceramic and carbon fiber pads also transfer heat out fast and will increase the performance. Heat decreases performance.

the GM pads are not bad but they just have a lot of dust. I think they went with this style pad to keep the noise down. Also they may be cheaper as to keep the cost of the car down. The HHR is a model of cost savings to keep the price low.
