300 FWHP From an Automatic?

Hey all, New to forums...Just picked up a 08 black SS with 5K on it...Looking to make this thing a little sleeper...Is 300 FWHP too much for the tranny? What is the max for the vehicle? Must remain dependable and I dont want to void my warranty...Thanks...Al

If you don't want to void the warranty, get the stage kit. It won't make 300WHP but it is about all you can do if your main goal is to keep the warranty. It makes 290 rated HP, and a good bit less than that to the wheel.

Can I add a performace tune on top for more HP? I can bring the tune back to stock if I need it serviced....Thanks...Al

Do an advanced search using the words warranty and tune in the HHR SS or the 2.0L Performance Tech forums and you will find some threads on the subject. GM has put out a bulletin regarding any non GM calibrations. Read below.

If a suspicious hard part failure is observed in the engine, transmission, transfer case or driveline, perform the calibration verification described to determine if a non-GM issued engine calibration is installed. Non-GM issued engine calibrations subject driveline components to stresses different than the calibrations which these components were validated to. Repairs to engine, transmission, transfer case and/or other driveline components where a non-GM engine calibration has been verified are not covered under the terms of the New Vehicle Warranty.

Stage Kit is your only option. Then beg GM for another higher hp, under warranty stage kit (not going to happen)

As the TSB hillsdale mentions, GM can tell if you had "tuned" the motor and then changed it back. If you want to maintain the warranty, don't put a non-GM tune on the car.

So the short answer is yes you can achieve that HP, but only if you want to chance losing your warranty.

These trannys were not lasting in Grand Prixs at or around 315-320 HP. Any thing over 300 HP will shorten the life or may create a failure. The bigger stonger trannys will not fit with out some modifications to the pan.

You can get the Stage 1 (HIGHLY recommended) which gets you to 290 and add the K&N Cold Air Intake which gives you another 9.3HP for a total of 299.3. Not 300, but pretty darn close.

But he did say 300 should be okay unless your gonna be at the track/racing it regularly. 300whp is what we're shooting for to start. I have a 2.4 but the tranny is basically the same. Even at 300, he will have to "tune" the tranny.
