brake noise

I have a '08 SS, auto, and I do have the start up brake problem which I'm waiting to get fixed when I bring it in for an oil change. I wait for 30 sec before driving the car and the brake pressure is fine by then, but about 50% of the time I notice a grinding noise coming from the rear brakes for the first few stop signs in my development, then by the 3rd it goes away. Probably not more than 2 minutes after starting to drive. The car has sat in the garage overnight when this happens. I don't notice it any other time. Anything to be concerned about? Thanks

It's probably rust on the rotors and most likely nothing to worry about. Is it possibly damp in your garage at all? Mine will behave like yours if exposed to moisture overnight.

It is common like he said for surface rust to build over night.

Heck I have seen it form just from washing the car.

It is nothing to worry about and happens to many cars. It has happened on all the cars I have owned with 4 wheel disc brakes.

Me too. Started when the temp went down in to the 30's a couple 'warmer' nights it stopped. Now it's back. ChevyManager had a name for it.

I agree! I just had this discussion at the dealer tonight as I wanted to know if there was anything that can be done. That grinding, howling sound every time I back out of my driveway is so annoying! A newer car shouldn't do that in my opinion! It's embarassing when you take someone out in a tool in your ride and it sings the blues the minute you leave the garage!

The service tech. stated that all 4 wheel discs do that, even his Cadillac. I said my Eldorado never did that, and my Grand Prix, Riviera, and any other car I've ever had never did this! I look at those grainy, ugly rear rotors and I think they have to go. Is there aftermarkets that anyone has a line on?

Ugh, my Lumina is TERRIBLE with that! Don't know why, but it always has been. Something in the rear drums just grinds when you back up for the first time of the day, or if it is damp. I've had people look at me from at least 100 yards away or more! Nothing we could do to fix it.... Nothing was wrong with it! Just something I had to deal with unfortunately.

My SS almost always has the temporary grinding noise, even if it sits for only a few hours.

I can tell you that I've had it happen on almost all of my 4-wheel disc cars including:

1999 Blazer
2002 Grand Prix
2003 Honda Accord
2007 Ford Freestyle
2008 HHR SS

And even occasionally on my 06 HHR which had rear drum brakes.
