broke intercooler
My local dealer's service manager said they don't receive any reimbursement from GM for diagnostic procedures, only for covered repair procedures (which are supposed to include the time required to diagnose the problem). I guess if I wasn't being paid for diagnostic time I might start fixing random things too... If GM's diagnostic machine says the MAF is busted, GM will pay the dealer to repair it (assuming it's under warranty). I suspect real-world GM vehicles end up with a lot of unnecessary repairs due to this bureaucracy, though I don't have the stats to prove it. It's a shame to put the dealers in a position where they have a financial incentive not to spend time correctly diagnosing the problem, as the dealers must and will do what it takes to get paid in lean times.
If the repair is NOT covered by GM warranty, lets say a rodent eats your engine harness wiring, or water gets into your mass air flow from driving in flooded condtions, or the customer left their gas cap loose causing a CEL, GM will not pay the tech for his diagnostic time because it's not a covered repair. And if the customer declines to pay for the repair then the tech gets nothing for his time.
Training is usually the problem with unecessary repairs.
I'd like to say thanks to ChevyMgr for coming to my rescue. He is a class act and not so far away that I can't give him my business.
Nebulous, the issue with the diags was that the service writer didn't listen to me and thought "well the check engine light is on we can run diags and figure it out" All he did was waste everyones time and kept the mechanic from being on a job he would be paid for. Some of these guys think that everyone that brings their car in is a dummy and doesn't know anything about cars.

Well just to close the loop on this saga. ChevyMgr called me on Friday that the IC was in. I dropped my SS off to him on Monday and Picked it up on Tuesday morning. Car was detailed, washed and vacumed.
TO BOOT my SS now runs like a scalded dog. I swear I would think that they threw a updated program in it or something. It ran great before but it now has a little extra kick for sure. Before I never noticed the boost getting over 13 - 14 lbs. even on day 1. Now I know it will get over 15. I really think that the original IC must have been cracked from the factory and it just took some time for it to really break.
Anyway I owe ChevyMgr a lot for helping me out when he didn't have to. Like I said before he is a class act and I have never in 32 years of driving ever dealt with anyone at a dealer that was so willing to help and caring that someone was happy with his product. Not Only do I owe him Chevy owe's him by keeping people in a Chevy when they could choose anyone else.
Buddy thank a million,
Russ
