1st I would get or borrow one of those hand held temperature guns. Take the car for a spin and get the brakes heated up or until you get that smell again. Then check the temps of the rotors and calipers at several spots. If that one side is several hundred degrees hotter, then you probably have a sticking caliper.
If both sides are around the same temp, then you may have some foreign substance on the rotors and pads that's just burning off.
Grease from a torn CV boot, something you picked up off the road etc. are all possibilities.
THIS was what I was going to contribute after thinking about it later last night. Harbor Freight has these guns, and they are perfect for this type of thing... George wins again. I am a day late, and least a dollar short.

Thanks again for everyone's help. Seems to be fine after taking the caliper off and pushing the pistons back in. Guessing one was stuck. Going to get some clean fluid in there and hopefully it wont happen again.

Change both calipers. Install new brake fluid and you'll be ahead of the game.
No "What if" questions in your head.

If you change the calipers , go big with the 14.5 inch kit or the 12.25 inch kit

What would the 14.5 rotors be like on both front and rear, using the OEM rear calipers as e brake only?

Our 2LT calipers have larger pistons in the calipers than the SS models do.

Brembo SS front calipers have four pistons , much better clamping force .
the SS non Brembo calipers are a single piston and are in fact smaller in diameter then the LS/LT caliper pistons

I should have been more clear on my post, I wasn't including the optional Brembo calipers..
