There's a strange note, on the automatic cell, that says "235hp in first and second gear."

Seems like there might be some sort of computer limited power peak in lower gears.

Torque dropped also, from:

260 lb-ft (353 Nm) @ 2000 rpm SAE CERTIFIED

The 5 speed to:

222 lb-ft (301 Nm) @ 1650 rpm SAE CERTIFIED

With the auto....

That's quite a bit of tq to lose.

you have to roll your cursor over that cell when you're in the Excel program. It doesn't show up until you roll over it.

So there must be some sort of engine management programming going on to reduce power in first and second... hmmm... so by the time I'm winding it out in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, I get 250 HP. I dunno... I guess I'll have to test drive the darn thing to see if it's got enough ooomph for me.

Well at least there is some new news, yippee, I guess.

What is the torque on the current 2.2L and 2.4L's?

The 2.4 is 165 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm.
The 2.2 is 152 lb.-ft. of torque at 4200 rpm.

In any case, it's still a 33 percent increase in torque over the 2.4L. I wonder if it will still have a sub 7-second 0-60 time...

If you poke around on that second link you can find some nice pics of the HHR SS engine and available transmissions...
Here's the 2.0L Turbo...

and the 5-speed trans...

and the wimpy automatic that can't take the full brunt of 260HP...
