Have you ever seen this color

1 Attachment(s)
I was browsing Listing All Cars yesterday and came upon this SS. I would call it metallic dark grey. It is the only SS I have ever seen with this color - and I have browsed the classifieds a lot. Has anyone ever seen another?

Lonwane 12-22-2017 09:39 AM

I believe the color is Amethyst. I've seen it on just 1 other HHR.

Oldblue 12-22-2017 09:42 AM

Apparently it’s Silverstone per this

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/hhr-...-colors-14964/

Dark Grey metallic would be a better match , what year is it?

https://www.autobytel.com/chevrolet/hhr/2008/color/

whopper 12-22-2017 09:57 AM

Agreed, that's not even close to Silverstone - it's way too dark for that. That Dark Grey metallic would be a better match.

Who knows, it could be a repaint with a non-stock color.

Oldblue 12-22-2017 10:01 AM

The one thread I posted showed the SS colours and Dark Grey wasn’t one of them, so maybe it’s a clone!!!

firemangeorge 12-22-2017 12:02 PM

I looked at the ad. It appears to be a true SS (although, no underhood pics)
That is not a 2009 SS stock color. Must be repainted.

Guitar Builder 12-22-2017 01:46 PM

If it is a repaint, they did the door jambs. The vin shows it is a SS.

Here is the listing

https://www.listingallcars.com/vdp/4...lac-of-Delavan

Oldblue 12-22-2017 02:43 PM

Well dark grey metallic must have been available on 2009 SS models.
I can say there are no white ones!

This site shows only six colours available in 2009 for the SS

https://www.carsdirect.com/2009/chevrolet/hhr/colors

These guys don’t show dark grey metallic for any 2009 HHR, that lunar quartz looks way to dark!

http://www.automotivetouchup.com/tou...olet/2009/hhr/

I’ve bought paint from these guys and it is a direct match even the 2003 GT paint was spot on! Better then the GM paint she got with the car!

Silverfox 12-23-2017 09:39 AM

It is a Stupid Chevrolet thing.

This car Is definitely Mocha Steel Metallic unless the color in the posting is way off.

My 2nd HHR was a new 2011 with that color .. Mocha Steel Metallic
That was the only year that color was available.

It was on the Ordering info and on the side window complete print out for new cars.

When I went to buy touch up paint from my Chevrolet Dealer it was listed as Magna Steel Metallic (Gray) from the parts department. That is what they go by.
I looks close to gray in certain lighting conditions but most of the time it is a Metallic Brown/Gray tone.

Silverfox

Oldblue 12-23-2017 09:45 AM

So if it’s a 2011 only colour, how’d it get on this 2009 SS?
Weird things happen, and I’m gonna email the vendor to see if they’ll send me the paint code.

Well that’s a more point now , I clicked on the link and the car has been sold!!!

Silverfox 12-23-2017 11:54 AM

Well... Now that it's gone I can speculate a little.....

Is it possible it is a 2011 1LT or 2LT Clone SS ???

Pretty hard to tell in a side picture except for the wheels and possibly rear air deflector.

If it was sold by a Dealer a call might reveal the vin number.
That could be converted to a build sheet.

Silverfox

hellshotrod 12-23-2017 06:37 PM

call gm with the vin if any one has it and ask what color it was built with , does look good tho ,that color , happy holidays to u all and yours ,,,

I didn't see the OP reference it as a 2009 car. If it is, switchblade would be my guess. From the side, everything says it is a real SS and not a fake one.

OP may not have said it but I looked up the original ad. It said 2009. That color wasn't available on a HHR SS.

Edit: (What I meant was I had looked up that original ad back when it was still an active link. )

Silverfox 12-30-2017 11:50 PM

I guess we should accept that it was a custom Mocha Steel Metallic repaint.

Can't prove it but cannot not prove it.

RJ_RS_SS_350 12-31-2017 12:40 AM

OPs link, while dead, used search criteria which gave me this.
https://www.google.com/search?q=2009...hrome&ie=UTF-8

2nd search result gives the VIN, 3GNCA63XX9S640476 which, when searched, gives this Google cache(5th result)
http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...&ct=clnk&gl=us

So it's Dark Gray Metallic.

Oldblue 12-31-2017 08:06 AM

Ok, so it was a 2009 model year , dark grey metallic . Solved? No because that is not an SS colour!
I still say respray it clone!

RJ_RS_SS_350 12-31-2017 09:20 AM

Agreed, it's not a stock SS color for that year, so it's either a respray, or couldn't it be a custom ordered color?

Here is another cached pic, sure looks like an SS, and the VIN backs up the claim.
https://webcache.googleusercontent.c...&ct=clnk&gl=us

Kunes Country is also a Buick/Cadillac/Chevy/GMC dealer, so it's possible that they listed the correct color.

If someone wants to keep pursuing this, I would recommend Googling the VIN periodically. When a car disappears from a website, it doesn't always mean it found a home. Often it just went to auction, and will be advertised again soon at the new dealer's site. Then you can contact them and get a pic of the RPO sticker, which will show the original color code.

No. You couldn't special order any other color than the stock ones offered on the SS.
I special ordered my SS. We even checked on different colors. (I really wanted to get a white SS)
My friend/manager at the dealer, who did my order, was told by GM there were no optional order colors for the SS.

Very Impressive Detective work .... but it still leaves me as a "Juror" Not Convinced.

I know "Mocha Steel Metallic" when I see it, and that OP picture shows that color IMHO.

Now with the Vin# any GM dealer can run a "Build Sheet" that will reveal the true color code put on at the Factory.

After purchasing 10 HHR's over the last 7 years I have seen Many Dealer adds with false and misleading information.
Some of it Laughable.

I got no dog in this. FMG, you've said before that you had very few choices when ordering your 2010. Choices you could have had a year prior. Dark Gray was an HHR color in 2009, maybe someone was able to order it that way. Probably not, but...

SF, if it is indeed a respray, it certainly could be the Mocha Steel. I've looked at the "pic only" threads here dedicated to the 2 colors. From pics alone(and only 2 for this car) it's really hard to tell the difference between the 2.

Agree with you about bad info in dealer ads! It would be interesting to see the original code, if anybody can get that from the VIN.

firemangeorge 12-31-2017 11:18 AM

I agree RJ. Just stating some things I've learned over the years. The 2009's did have more choices but that color still didn't show up as having been put on any SS at the factory(based on the 2009 chart I showed in post #5)
There were several colors in 08,09 that were on the regular LS and LT's that you could not get on the SS. White was one color available every year. Just never on the SS.

Until someone gets an actual look at the car in person, we'll just keep discussing it.
My personal opinion is it's a repaint, color change. Lots of times people will change colors because of accident damage to the car and it needing a complete
respray.
Again, I'm just guessing here. But, I used to work in a body shop and we did several car color changes after having done major body work.

Silverfox 12-31-2017 01:25 PM

Or.. a Prior Owner had "Big Bucks" and just wanted a Specific color. The picture looks a lot like Factory paint job to me but Good Re-Painters can match the quality appearance with todays paints and equipment.

As I mentioned in my earlier post there were Conditions under which I had a bit of a challenge to tell my Mocha HHR was not more gray.

Camera's and Light Conditions plus transferring the picture to a Website could make a difference in the True Color.

I have had a 2010 and a 2011 Cyber Gray Metallic and both were closer to Black, but the 2009 I believe was a considerably lighter Metallic Gray not Silver.

No way, you didn't ruin anything! Appreciate the help!

So the original was Silverstone/Silver Ice/Switchblade Silver. But Silver, not Gray. So a repaint. :thumb:

Its enough similar (whatever color) that a repaint would be easier to miss. This particular photo has some poor lighting making it all the more to ponder for those not working today. :)

I'm not sure it has been repainted.

solman98 01-02-2018 02:07 PM

You never know what "mistakes" the factory can make. I remember one back in 08 that bought an SS and it had an SS running board on one side and a regular running board on the other. The buyer (can't remember who it was) was the original owner and never noticed it until later.

Oldblue 01-02-2018 03:13 PM

We’ve also seen an SS come from the factory with an LS/LT rear bumper.
Stuff happens!
And we know this is just an exercise in cloning

This just came up on Ebay. Lousy pictures but appears to be white. Probably has been painted.

Oldblue 01-06-2018 09:13 AM

Never saw a white SS , cause they didn’t build one, which begs the question, a respray or a clone?

Guitar Builder 01-06-2018 09:15 AM

I think the vin supports a 2010 SS with D for the motor code? Or do I have that wrong? I know it is X for the earlier SS's.

Oldblue 01-06-2018 09:50 AM

Hopefully McB_HHR will chime in soon
