HHR SS Gears

For anyone like myself and a few others, the gearing is what makes the cobalts faster. We can compare tunes and wonder why they get better times but this is probably going to be the bottow line why they will be faster. A slight weight difference and aerodynamics will not make the SS HHR a second slower than certain SS cobalts, but gearing would. Let the discussion begin, but I only know of one HHR in the low 13's and the resst of us are in the 14 range with stock tires. Anyone want to tackle a gear swap!! =-) HHR ss 4.05 to Cobalts 3.84

Your lucky I looked that up for you

I've got my lift, you get the gears. I would assume Cobalt gears would swap right in

LOL, i'm sure that's more than I want to get into. I'm happy with what I have but stay tuned everyone. We will be comparing the Hahn tune with the Trifecta soon! No doubt the Trifecta is a lot more easy on the pocket and probably equal to or better in performance.

HHR SS has 121 cu. in. and Cobalt SS has 122 cu. in. Minimal difference but I thought these were the same motors??

I dont that a higher gearing would make the cobalt faster having a 4.0x gear compared to a 3.8x Gear wouldnt make that much difference. Also i have a bone stock hhr ss with hp tuners that i spent 5 min on a tune and ran a 14.168@102.05 with the stock rev limiter in place that was with a 2.48 60'. I will figure out the DA on the run but it wasnt that nice out. I dont really know how a cobalt would run with the same tune but i might know soon if my friend with a cobalt with a downpipe and i/c piping wants me to tune his car. I know his best was a 14.1 on a nicer night but i know he had a better 60 than me.

could be a difference in the heads with only 1 cubic inche difference...that's .25" per cylinder

maybe the heads are different? Doubt it though, wouldn't be worth the change

I will be watching your progress. You'll have to keep posting some times slips as they get better and see where you're at. All i'm going by is a local guy with an SS cobalt runing in the 12.7-13.0 range with the trifecta tune, intake, and downpipe. His mph is also around 112-113. Nice to see someone else interested in track times with the SS. Thanks for posting and keep us updated!

Sorry, not sure if you are aware that you are looking at 300 pounds. If so, you don't believe 300 pounds make a difference? You are looking at about .6 in 1/4 mile stock. You might be surprised.. Also, the final gear isn't the only gear in the tranny. I believe the gear ratio's (1-5) are different between the two. Three hundred pounds makes a big difference.
