HHR SS and throttle response question

This is the first time I’ve ever owned or driven a turbo charged engine so I don’t know what engine response to expect when I go wide open throttle.

Here is what I have observed. This morning I was alone on a boulevard at a traffic light which just turned green. I started off in first under heavy acceleration, shifted to second and went WOT. The boost was well above zero and the car was pulling hard. Then, about 2 or 3 seconds after WOT, the boost gauge jumped way up and the car just started pulling really hard.

Is this short delay from going WOT to feeling the full pull normal for a turbo charged engine? Is this what you are experiencing with your manual SS? Any idea why the delay is there?

If you allow the turbo to spool down between shifts you can experience turbo lag. Key is to keep the revs up, shift quickly and if you want the best of both worlds try using no-lift shifting. Feels awesome and sounds great when it pops between shifts!

The answer to your first 2 questions is yes and yes.. The 3rd question is because it takes the turbo turbine a short time to be rotated by the exhaust gases and therefor a delay in the increase in pressure of the inflow air....it's all in the weblink...

If you listen to the above advise and use comp mode you won't have nearly as much lag as you indicate. Even without comp mode, 3 seconds is a very long time and if your car is really lagging for 3 seconds then something IS wrong.

Think about this spec, the car is rated to do 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds IIRC. With a 3 second lag that 2nd 3 seconds must REALLY rock!

I'm assuming that the 0-60 times are using comp mode where the turbo is spooled up before launch.

My comment above was a lower RPM wide open throttle, that is where I saw the 2-3 seconds before the boost gauge jump way up the the car started pulling much harder.

Sounds like you are lugging the engine. Keep the RPM's up!

Yes, I'm quite sure of this! I tried out the competition mode other day and all I can say is "man is that a fantastic pull!" It got a little wild when I speed-shifted from 2nd-3rd but I kept it pasted to the floor thru 4 gears. Was up over 100 in not much more than a 1/4 mile!
