Is it just me or are our 5 spd shifters garbage

Whenever i'm not really getting into it shifting below 3G it is hard to get it to not KLONK... I have been driving stick all my life and if i'm really not concentrating the engine just doesn't like low speed shifts.. Maybe its the engine, maybe clutch, maybe shifter... I know if I shift 3500 RPMS and higher there is never a problem and it shifts really smooth... As I type this it might just be the engine being a turbo car at low RPM... But I do know that when I power shift while racing it scares me alittle because I feel I could rip the shifter right out... Does anyone have an aftermarket shifter in their SS?

Coming from a Mazdaspeed MX5 and a Honda S2000-sure is! Otherwise, not too bad I guess.

Stock shifter IS garbage. I had mine replaces @ ~7k miles cause something inside of it just snapped. Was doing spirited shifting at the time but still...it's mostly plastic and feels so rubbery.

As far as your shifting problem, there are a couple things that cause that. One I know of is the cable clamps that are about 6 inches in front of the shifter. The become loose somehow. There are a couple threads about this on here. Do a search and u will find em.

I'm with Rob... TWM is a much better shifter then stock. I've had mine installed for about 70k miles now and no issues... Still not the smoothest feeling shift, but better.. stock just felt like it was going to break off in my hand

also, IMO if you go with a TWM definitely go with the Aluminum spacers.. gives it a much more solid feel

Other than the wife not able to drive a stick and this being a daily driver in traffic one of the other reasons I went with thw auto is the shifters all go to hell in GM FWD cars.

Cable shifters today are better but with age and wear they really get bad. Some companies have mastered them but this has been one area GM has fallen short in.

I drove a new Cruze and it shifted very well. It will be interesting to see if GM has solved this issue post Chapter 11.

You want to feel a bad shifter....drive an old Fiero with a lot of miles. Bad shifter and often poor clutch pedal.

Ok so I am not alone.. Everytime I wasnt to power shift I feel like i'm going to rip the damn thing out of the car... I guess having built cars in the past and the last stick that I have driven on a daily bases is my LS1 Chevelle with a t56 and B&M short throw shifter I feel like I could yank on that thing as hard as I want and it won't break.. Ok upgrade shifter it is cause this thing is crap..

If you want to drive it agressive or hard, then you should upgrade the shifter.
Mine is just a DD,so I am OK with the stock shifter for now. No real problems with mine. Shifts fine under normal driving.
